About Us

Participation Lodge is long-term care facility for the mentally and physically challenged that focuses on the individual needs of our residents. We also offer use of our facilities to the general public at very attractive rates. Please read on for more information about Participation Lodge.

Where we are located

Participation Lodge is located on a 25-acre site in the rolling countryside 20 minutes south of Owen Sound and 15 minutes north of Markdale in southwestern Ontario and approximately 10 minutes drive along County Rd. #24 to the East of Highway #10. This beautiful setting features views and is surrounded by maintained grounds accessible to all residents.

Our Statement (1982)

“Participation Lodge is a caring community intent on improving the quality of life for physically and mentally challenged people.”

Our Goal

Our Board of Directors, staff and volunteers are dedicated to ensuring our residents and clients can enjoy a positive life experience in spite of the physical and/or developmental barriers they face.

Our Challenge

is to accomplish the above goal in spite of the financial barriers we face!

Our Residents and Clients

The majority of our residents and clients require a very high level of care due to physical and developmental challenges as well as medical conditions such as Cerebral Palsy or Spina Bifida etc.  Most of the people we support are in wheelchairs and are completely dependent on others for just about everything!  Think about that statement for a moment.  Imagine waiting for someone to come and get you out of bed in the morning, help you get dressed, look after your personal hygiene (bathing, toileting), having someone prepare your meals and assist with eating and drinking, arranging your activities, then getting you back into bed and turning you through the night.

Participation Lodge is committed to provide “quality of life care” which goes well beyond the needs of “personal care”. Residents are seen as individuals, each with personal needs - both physical and emotional.

Our Facilities

Our modern facility includes rooms for 20 residents, some private and shared, common areas, dining room and a television and activity area. Residents can enjoy time outside on a large balcony and external courtyard overlooking the 25 acres on which we are located. Our facilities include a swimming pool, exercise room, activity area and meeting room that can be rented by the public.

Our Funding

Participation Lodge is funded by the Ministry of Health & Long Term Care, the Ministry of Community & Social Services and the Ministry of Housing.  Collectively these three ministries supply funds for our “operating budget” only.

Operating a facility like ours is an expensive endeavour. Government funding covers heating, hydro, some maintenance, some recreational activities, food, linens, medical supplies, personal care supplies, special transferring units, bathing equipment and staff wages so our residents can benefit from an excellent quality of care.

Government cut-backs have resulted in 0% increase in our operating budget for the past five years!   We wish we could say the same for our expenses.  Unfortunately our expenses continue to rise as does our struggle to stay within the limits of a very tight operating budget.

In order to provide “quality-of-life” care to our residents, we have embarked on an ambitious fund-raising campaign, which has been helped by many area businesses and organizations. We have called this venture LodgePodge, a mixed bag of volunteer and community involvement opportunities to increase public the awareness of our facility, programs and services.
